Steven Begleiter Profile Steven Begleiter is a 47 year old, blue collar businessman from Chappaqua, New York. He is not a professional poker player, nor does he consider himself a terribly skilled veteran of the game, and yet he is now one of the elite member of the November Nine; set to join 8 other exceptional poker players later this year as the final table of the 2009 WSOP Main Event plays out.
Begleiter maintains, at least for now, that he will not be quiting his day job. The Senior Principal at Flexpoint Ford, a New York investment company, Steven is well aware that he stands to walk away with at least $1.2 million when the 2009 WSOP comes to a close on November 10th.
He is a hard worker, a quick thinker and very good with numbers. No wonder Steven Begleiter was able to work his way through a field of 6,494 competitors to reach the November Nine. Dedicated to his job during the day, his evening hours are his own, often spent playing local home poker games.
It was one such evening that Steve Begleiter's fate took an interesting twist. He a was the eventual champion of a league game, with a spectacular prize up for grabs - $10,000. The exact amount he needed to buy-in to the 2009 WSOP Main Event. Begleiter did just that, and sits happily awaiting the reconvergence of the November Nine.
Steven never expected to get this far. In fact, he described the first 12 days of the Main Event as dancing between raindrops in the middle of a minefield. Begleiter not only avoided the mines, he tapped his way to the third highest chip stack of the November Nine with 29,885,000.
Steven has no documented live tournament cashes, no known live event experience at all in fact. One would wonder how an amateur like Steven Begleiter will stand up against the likes of poker pros like Jeff Shulman, with 15 WSOP cashes under his belt, or Phil Ivey, with 7 WSOP bracelet and nearly $10 million in live tournament winnings.
Up to this point in the WSOP, Begleiter is best known for his sensational cheering section. Begleiter has an immense following of friends, family and fans. Begs, Begs, Begs was often heard shouted from a large section of the stands whenever he was faced with a decisive hand, large pot or big win.
The luck of the draw has kept Seven Begleiter in the WSOP on several occasions. The most significant was an all-in push against Tommy Vedes. Steven held A-Q, Vedes pockets Kings. No help came on the flop, but an Ace on the turn changed his fate. A Queen on the river sealed the deal, and Begleiter doubled up to 10 million.
Will that luck carry on to this November? Can his cheering section keep him going throughout the 4-days of the final table? Could Begleiter take the ultimate prize of more than $8.5 million? We'll find out later this year when the November Nine reconvene at the Rio in Las Vegas.
