Contributed Rakeback

Contributed Rakeback

While most online poker sites use what is known as the “Dealt Rakeback” method to calculate the percentage of poker rakeback you will receive, there are some sites that use a method called “Contributed Rakeback” to make this calculation. And it is this method –contributed rakeback—that I will discuss in this article.

Online poker sites that use contributed rakeback for their rakeback calculations still use the same formula as the sites who use the “Dealt Rakeback” method when it comes to determining the amount of rake you have personally paid: This formula is known as Monthly Gross Revenue or MGR for short.  Your MGR is the number that your rakeback percentage will be applied to, in order to calculate your final rakeback earnings.

Now, suppose you have a total MGR of $300 and you are receiving a rakeback deal that gives you 33% rakeback. To determine your total rakeback amount you simply multiply your MGR by your rakeback percentage (in this case $300 * .33) which would give you total rakeback earnings of $99.

The difference between dealt rakeback and contributed rakeback is how the online poker site arrives at your MGR number: Here is how it works for contributed rakeback:

Contributed rakeback means that in order for you to be considered as having contributed to the rake you must have put some amount of money into the pot –whether you called pre-flop or were simply in one of the blinds. For instance, suppose in a 10-handed game that a player raises, another player calls, and everyone else folds including the blinds, four people will be eligible for rakeback on this hand: The player who raised, the player who called, and the two blinds: Since all four of these players contributed to the pot in some way.

*A select few sites use what is known as weighted contributed rakeback, where the amount of money a player contributes to the pot affects the amount of rakeback they will receive. However, sites using this method of rakeback calculation are few and far between.*

If the total rake taken from the pot ended up being $2, each of these four players is considered to have contributed $.50 to the rake. So, any player with a rakeback deal would have $.50 added to their MGR.

A couple things to keep note of when figuring out your rakeback using the contributed rakeback calculation:

  • It doesn’t matter if you contribute $.05 or $500 to the pot
  • Unless the online poker site is using the weighted method, which is unlikely, it doesn’t matter how much you contribute, as long as you contribute in some way.

Even players who do not have a rakeback deal in place are counted as having contributed to the rake for the purposes of rakeback calculations. Whether the other players in the game have a rakeback deal, or not, will have no bearing on your rakeback total: your rakeback totals are only affected by the number of hands you play and the total rake taken during those hands.

Obviously, this method will be the bane of super-tight players who play very few pots. On the flip-side, loose/aggressive players will probably see an increase in their MGR if they play under a contributed rakeback deal instead of a dealt rakeback deal.

The most popular site that uses the contributed rakeback method is UB. Luckily, Rakebackftw offers the best UB rakeback deal.
