Calculating Heads-Up Rakeback
While every poker player should be playing with a rakeback deal –it’s free money after all—there is one particular subset of online poker players where a rakeback deal will not only add to their profits, but could in fact send their profits soaring through the stratosphere: I speak of course of Heads-Up poker players.
Heads-up players have the added advantage of splitting the rake between only two players –and regardless of the method, Dealt rakeback, contributed rakeback, or weighted contributed rakeback heads-up players will always receive 50% of the total rake from the pot added to their MGR totals–MGR is the amount of rake you contributed to the pot that is eligible for rakeback.
Think about that for a minute: If you are participating in a 10-handed game with an average rake of $3, your MGR would be $.30 per hand. So if you have a 33% rakeback deal, you would be receiving approximately $.10 per hand in rakeback –assuming you are playing under the “Dealt” method, if you are playing under the contributed, or weighted contributed, these numbers could vary either up or down.
On the other hand, a heads-up poker player participating in a game with an average rake of $3 would be receiving $1.50 added to their MGR every hand: So that same 33% rakeback deal would be worth about $.50 a hand! That is a 500% increase in rake, and the only change is the number of players in the pot: Same game and stakes, just less players.
Some more food for thought is the amount of hands you can play heads-up: With fewer players making decisions the game moves a lot faster. So, while a player in a 9 or 10-handed game would be happy to see 100 hands an hour, a player in a heads-up game will see in the neighborhood of 200-250 hands in an hour. Using the low-end of those calculations; at 200 hands/hour, with $.50 per hand in rakeback you’d be earning $100 per hour for every table you are playing: JUST IN RAKEBACK!
Obviously, it’s unlikely a heads-up table will average the maximum rake –with fewer flops seen and so on-- but even half or 1/3 of that amount works out to a lot of money.
