The 2009 WSOP has been one of the most memorable in some time; and the Main Event hasn’t even concluded yet! 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the WSOP, and to celebrate the milestone Harrah’s added ‘special’ events to the itinerary. Even without these special events, the poker world’s top players descended on Vegas, and they came to play.
- The 09’ WSOP had four multiple bracelet winners: Phil Ivey, Greg ‘FBT’ Mueller, John Brock Parker, and Jeff Lisandro (3). In any other year anyone of these players would likely walk off with the POY award, but in 2009 it will be Lisandro and his three bracelets taking home the award. In fact, two other players, Vitaly Lunkin and Ville Wahlbeck finished in the 2nd and 3rd spots.
- The 09’ WSOP will create 15 new millionaires. That’s right, 15 players will take home over $1 million at the 2009 WSOP: Six players –Vitaly Lunkin, David Bach, Isaac Haxton, Matthew Hawrilenko, Ville Wahlbeck, and Pete Vilandos have eclipsed the $1 million mark, and the final 9 players of the Main Event will join them
- Jeff Lisandro’s unprecedented Triple Crown. Lisandro is not the first player to win three bracelets in a single WSOP; he is the first player to win three bracelets in all three 7-Card-Stud disciplines at the same WSOP! Lisandro’s incredible feat catapulted the long-time pro to the fore-front of the 2009 WSOP talk, and made him the undisputed king of 7-Card-Stud.
- Ivey works on his legacy. If Phil Ivey’s place on the Mount Rushmore of poker wasn’t already a given, he certainly cemented his place at the 2009 WSOP. Ivey took home bracelets #6 and 7, and as I write this is making a deep run in the Main Event; he is amongst the chip leaders with only 64 players remaining.
- Coming out party. If you didn’t know who Greg ‘FBT’ Mueller or John Brock Parker were before the WSOP, you definitely do now! Both players captured two bracelets at the 09’ WSOP and staked their claim as top pros. Parker, a long-time Internet player, and Mueller the former NHL player turned poker pro both seem to have bright futures ahead of them.
- Ville “$10k” Wahlbeck. Wahlbeck had six cashes at the 2009 WSOP; five of them in championship events! Even more astounding, Ville finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 13th in those events. It’s no wonder the Fin ended up 2nd in the POY race.
- Negreanu cashes eight times. Another top pro who had a phenomenal WSOP was Daniel Negreanu. Despite not winning a bracelet, Negreanu was able to accumulate eight cashes in 09’, including two final tables.
Any of these accomplishments would headline an entire WSOP, the fact that there were so many amazing moments in a single WSOP is absurd; and the Main Event has yet to conclude. With two former champions still alive –Joe Hachem and Peter Eastgate—and Phil Ivey topping the list of big name pros still in the hunt, 2009 could go down as the greatest WSOP ever.
